Breaking: Some Of The Students That Kidnapped Have Escaped
The students, aged between 10 and 18, escaped individually over the course of Friday and Saturday, as reported by Most Rev. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, the chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Niger State and the school's proprietor. He stated that 253 students and 12 teachers are still in the hands of the kidnappers.
"We confirmed this after reaching out to and visiting some parents," Yohanna explained. The children and their teachers were taken by armed assailants who attacked St. Mary's School, a Catholic institution located in the remote Papiri community of Niger State, on Friday. No group has claimed responsibility for the abductions, and authorities have deployed tactical teams along with local hunters to aid in the rescue efforts.
It remains unclear where the remaining children are being held or how the escaped students made their way home. Nigeria's military and police have not yet responded to inquiries from the Associated Press."While we are relieved by the return of these 50 children, I urge everyone to keep praying for the safe return of the others," Yohanna stated.
In response to the kidnappings, all schools in Niger State were ordered to close on Saturday, according to reports. Dominic Adamu, whose daughters attend St. Mary's School but were not abducted, expressed that the attack "took everyone by surprise."
