Just-In: Kastina Government Closed All Public Schools For Insecurity.
The Katsina State Government has ordered the immediate closure of all public schools in light of growing security threats in the North-West region. This decision, announced on Friday by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, led to a swift return of students as boarding schools throughout the state sent pupils home to their parents and guardians. Videos and images shared online depicted students leaving school grounds with their belongings shortly after the announcement.
Although the government has not released an official statement, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Yusuf Jibia, confirmed the closure in an interview with DW Hausa. He described the measure as a precaution following recent attacks in nearby states. “Only examinations remain for our students,” Jibia stated. “We must take action now to prevent any potential attacks.”
Katsina borders Kebbi State, where gunmen recently abducted 26 schoolgirls from the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga. The state has experienced similar incidents in the past, including the December 2020 kidnapping of over 300 students in Kankara, the August 2021 abduction of ten students and a teacher in Faskari, and the January 2024 kidnapping of two female students from Al-Qalam University.
The closure in Katsina comes amid a rise in violent attacks across the North. In Niger State, gunmen attacked St. Mary’s Primary and Secondary School in Papiri on Friday, abducting an unknown number of students. Witnesses reported that the attackers arrived on over 60 motorcycles and shot the school’s gatekeeper, who was seriously injured.
In Kwara State, bandits raided a Christ Apostolic Church parish in Eruku, kidnapping at least 30 worshippers and killing three individuals. The kidnappers allegedly demanded ₦100 million for each victim. Meanwhile, 26 schoolgirls remain unaccounted for in Kebbi State following the invasion of their school in Maga town on Monday. Amid rising fears, the Nasarawa State Police Command dismissed reports of two pupils being kidnapped from St. Peter’s Academy in Rukubi, labeling the claim as false.
